What’s it like buying a car at Group 1 Kia Hub City?
Buying a car at a Kia dealership is a mixed experience: some visits are quick and calm, and some run long. What matters is knowing what to expect at each step and how to check it before you sign.
We walk the buy in the order you live it, from shopping and trade value online to the finance office and the service lane after. Our Google reviewers describe each step, waits included. A mixed experience turns predictable once the numbers are on paper.
Keep reading below, then schedule a test drive in Lubbock. Bringing your own numbers to the lot settles this faster than any spec sheet.
What buying a Kia in Lubbock looks like from first click to keys
Most of the work happens before you walk in. You shop, value your trade, and get pre-approved online, then finish the deal at our store at 6006 19th Street. Cox Automotive’s Car Buyer Journey Study found 63% of recent buyers called that blend of online and in-dealer steps the ideal way to buy, against 28% who wanted the whole thing online (Cox Automotive, 2026).
We sell and service Kia and nothing else, and we are Lubbock’s Kia franchise. That means one store holds the whole lineup, from the K4 and K5 sedans to the Sportage, Sorento, and Telluride, plus the Carnival and the EV3, EV6, EV9, and Niro EV. Buyers come in from Wolfforth, Shallowater, Slaton, Levelland, and Plainview too.
If you remember Gene Messer Kia, it is the same store at the same address. We now go by Group 1 Kia Hub City, and many older listings still carry the old name.
Shop and value your trade online before you drive over
Online is where you can do the slow work at your own pace. You can browse new, used, and certified pre-owned Kia inventory, value your trade, and get a fast pre-approval before you visit. Check the trade number first: Edmunds found 28.2% of trade-ins in July 2025 carried negative equity, with buyers owing an average of $6,902 above what the vehicle was worth (Edmunds, 2025).
Negative equity means you owe more on your trade than it is worth. Ask where that amount goes. If it rolls into the new loan, you want to see it as its own line, not folded into the payment.
Your trade also lowers your tax bill. Texas charges 6.25% sales tax on the price minus your trade allowance (Texas Comptroller, 2026). A $10,000 trade allowance cuts the tax by $625, so ask for the allowance in writing as its own number.
On certified pre-owned, Kia says a vehicle must be under six years old with 80,000 miles or fewer and pass a 165-point inspection, with a Carfax report run as part of it. Ask to see both.
Five terms to know before you read a price sheet
Five terms decide most of the dollars in a car deal. Learn them once and any price sheet, ours or anyone’s, reads the same way. Then ask for each one on paper, on the exact vehicle you plan to buy.
| Term | What it means | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Out-the-door price | Vehicle price plus tax, title, registration, and every dealer fee | Ask for it in writing on one named vehicle |
| Trade allowance | The dollar value credited to you for your trade | Ask for it as its own line |
| Documentary fee | A dealer charge for preparing the paperwork | Ask what it is, and see it on paper |
| APR | The yearly cost of the loan, interest included | Compare it with your pre-approval |
| Negative equity | The amount you owe above what the car is worth | Ask if it is rolled into the new loan |
Get the price and every fee in writing on the exact vehicle
Our pricing follows the market, and we show price and terms on a specific vehicle. So ask for the number on the unit you want, not on a model in general. Part of the total is fixed by the state for every dealer in Texas, and the rest is a short list you can read line by line.
| Line | Amount in Lubbock County | Who sets it |
|---|---|---|
| Sales tax | 6.25% of price minus trade allowance | State of Texas |
| Title fee | $28 | TxDMV |
| Registration | $51.75 | TxDMV |
| County local fee | $10 | TxDMV |
| Inspection program fee | $7.50 a year, or $16.75 for two years on a new vehicle | TxDMV |
| Documentary fee | No state dollar cap | The dealer |
TxDMV also adds a $4.75 processing and handling fee. A fully electric car carries a $200 annual fee at registration, and $400 up front on a new EV issued two years of registration. That matters if you are looking at an EV3, EV6, EV9, or Niro EV.
The documentary fee is the line to ask about. Texas has no hard cap, but on financed deals a dealer charging more than $225 must file a notice and cost analysis with the state (Texas Office of Consumer Credit Commissioner, 2024). Ask us what ours is, and ask any dealer to show it as its own line.
Watch for a vehicle inventory tax line too. It is a property tax on the dealer, a negotiable item on the sales agreement, and sales tax is not charged on it (Texas Comptroller, 2026).
Read the finance terms before you agree to anything
The finance office is where a good visit can slow down. An online pre-approval answers the rate question before you sit down, so the paper in front of you is something to compare. Read these four things on the exact vehicle before you sign:
- APR. Match it against your pre-approval. If it is higher, ask why.
- Term. A longer term lowers the monthly payment and raises the total interest you pay.
- Total of payments. This is what you will actually pay across the whole loan.
- Add-ons. An extended warranty, gap coverage, or service plan has its own price. Ask for each as a separate line and answer yes or no one at a time.
Take the paper home if you want to. A deal that is good today is still good after you read it.
The service relationship starts the day you sign
Kia lists a 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty and a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty on its 2026 model pages, and we do the warranty and recall work on 19th Street. Ask at signing who your service advisor will be and how to book. J.D. Power’s 2025 study found 22% of new buyers want a follow-up a few weeks after delivery, and 53% of them never get one (J.D. Power, 2025).
So ask for a feature walk-through at delivery, and ask when to expect a call. Oil changes, appointment scheduling, and tire rotations are all topics our reviewers bring up, which tells you the service lane is where many of our customers keep coming back.
What our 2,045 Google reviewers say, including the one-star complaints
Our Google rating is 4.5 stars across 2,045 reviews, and kind staff is the topic reviewers raise most. Sales without pressure is on that list too. Of those reviews, 1,659 are five-star, about 81%.
A little over 9% are one-star, 190 reviews, and wait time is the third-largest topic reviewers raise. We name it plainly because it is real: some visits run long. If your day is tight, book an appointment and tell us when you need to leave.
| Dimension | What customers report | Who said it |
|---|---|---|
| Pressure and price | “No hard sales and realistic prices” | Chad C., Google, July 2026 |
| Finance and speed | “we got approved, signed everything, and were out the door” | Liz T., Google, August 2026 |
| Service follow-up | “kept me up to date with my car as it was being evaluated by their engineers” | Ryan O., Google, July 2026 |
Take these five checks with you to any Kia dealership
Five checks protect you at any Kia dealership, and four of them can be done before you leave home. Each one asks for a number on paper.
| Step | Get this in writing | How we make it easier |
|---|---|---|
| Shopping | A price on one named vehicle | We show pricing and terms on a specific unit |
| Trade | The trade allowance as its own line | We value your trade online before you visit |
| Pricing | An out-the-door total with every fee itemized | The online steps are done before you arrive |
| Finance | APR, term, and the price of each add-on | An online pre-approval gives you a rate to compare |
| Service | Your advisor’s name and how to book | Warranty, recall, and service work sit in the same store |
Frequently asked questions
Is Gene Messer Kia the same dealership as Group 1 Kia Hub City?
Yes. It is the same store at 6006 19th Street in Lubbock, now under the Group 1 name. Many third-party listings still show Gene Messer Kia, so a search for the old name may not land on us.
Can I get pre-approved for a Kia loan online before I visit?
Yes. We offer fast online pre-approval, and you can value your trade online at the same time. The terms on a specific vehicle come when you pick the unit.
How do I get a Kia price in writing before I go?
Ask for the out-the-door price on one named vehicle, using its stock number or VIN. We show pricing and terms on a specific unit, so that number is the one to bring with you.
How long does buying a Kia take?
It runs from the same day to a few days. With the trade value and pre-approval already done online, you finish in store inside one shopping cycle.
What is Kia certified pre-owned?
It is a used Kia under six years old with 80,000 miles or fewer that passes a 165-point inspection by a Kia-trained technician. A Carfax report is run as part of that inspection.
Can I buy from you if I live in Levelland or Wolfforth?
Yes. We serve Lubbock and the South Plains, including Wolfforth, Shallowater, Slaton, Levelland, and Plainview. You can do the shopping, trade value, and pre-approval from home and make one trip to finish.
Do electric Kias cost more to register in Texas?
Yes. Fully electric vehicles pay a $200 annual fee at registration renewal, and a new EV issued two years of registration pays $400. The fee does not apply to hybrids.
A mixed experience gets predictable on paper
Some of your visit is out of anyone’s hands, like a busy day or a long wait. The rest sits in numbers you can ask for before you sign. Get the vehicle price, the trade allowance, and the finance terms written down, and a mixed experience becomes one you can check.
