If you observe your car lights dimming while driving, it’s most likely due to a dying battery. If the car battery checks out fine, there are other trouble spots that may be responsible for the issue. Whether it’s the battery or something else, you should get the problem fixed as quickly as possible. When your lights aren’t functioning properly, you might become a danger to other drivers.

Since the battery is the easiest part to diagnose, this is where a technician will look first. If the battery isn’t the cause of your flickering car lights, you might be dealing with a failing light bulb. Light bulbs are an easy fix and present an opportunity to upgrade to new energy-efficient LED bulbs.
If it is a blown fuse, you might be looking at a larger problem as fuses are a safety feature. In most cases, a fuse dies when there is too much electricity runs through it. As an example, if the anti-lock brakes are connected to a 10amp fuse, and the fuse receives over 10amps of electrical current, the fuse would fail. In this example, a failed fuse would cause your anti-lock brakes to fail. If there is a fuse that regularly fails, bring your vehicle in and we’ll thoroughly diagnose the larger, potentially more serious problem.
Alternator
Lights flickering on the dash could also be one of the signs that the alternator is failing. Consider this, you start your car with battery power, but the alternator provides the power when your vehicle is running. If you drive an old vehicle with halogen headlights, you may notice them get dimmer with a failing alternator. On newer cars equipped with LED or HID lights, they may flicker on and off or just stop functioning altogether.
Headlight switch going bad
A bad light switch, whether it’s the interior lights dimmer or the headlight switch knob, should be considered when you have flickering car lights. In some rare situations, replacing a worn switch may solve the issue, especially in vehicles with excessive wear or older vehicles. If your car is new, it could be a sign of a bigger problem with the car’s electrical system.
