Gene Messer Kia welcomes you to learn what the signals of a broken gas cap are.
The most common symptom of faulty gas caps is a gas cap that is loose or a gas cap that won’t completely tighten. This might not seem important right away, but if it’s not completely sealed then the fuel system can be contaminated with dirt and grime. If the gas cap is not sealing properly, try checking the rubber seal to make sure it isn’t brittle or missing. If you drive an old vehicle, be sure the metal gas cap is not bent or damaged. Both can contribute to the gas cap problems and might even require a replacement from the original manufacturer.
What issues can an ill-fitting gas cap cause, well a check engine light? A loose gas cap will not only let fuel vapors escape, but it can also let in grime and dirt. These gasoline vapors may cause an error in the emissions system, which would light up the check engine light. Grime that seeps into the gas tank can also damage fuel injectors. The most common indicator of a faulty gas cap is the smell of gasoline inside your car.
If your car, truck, or SUV was not built with a capless gas tank, it’s not recommended that you drive without a gas cap. If your car is a little older, there’s a possibility that gas could slosh out from the tank during aggressive corners or other enthusiastic driving. Driving without a gas cap can also lead to poor fuel efficiency because the fuel could evaporate without the correct seal on the tank. The smell is the gasoline evaporating from your gas tank, which can cause poor gas mileage.
If you’ve looked at the gas cap, the problems you are having might be caused by contaminated gas. If the car has difficulty starting, won’t accelerate, or just is not running correctly, then you might just have contaminated gas.
