How pricing and fees work at Group 1 Kia Hub City
A Kia’s sticker price is the smallest part of what you sign for, because the MSRP is one line on paperwork that carries many. Most shoppers compare Kias by that one line and find out the rest at the desk. The number worth settling before you drive to 19th Street is the out-the-door total, written on the exact vehicle you are buying. Until that total is on paper, you do not have a price.
Keep reading below, then schedule a test drive in Lubbock. Bringing your own numbers to the lot settles this faster than any spec sheet.
What a Kia costs with fees included, line by line
Your out-the-door total is the MSRP plus the destination charge, Texas sales tax, registration and title charges, and the dealer documentary fee, minus what your trade-in is worth. Each one is its own line on the paperwork, and you can ask about each by name.
| Term | What it means | Who sets it |
|---|---|---|
| MSRP | The manufacturer’s suggested starting price for one trim | Kia |
| Destination charge | The charge for delivering the car from the factory to the dealer | Kia |
| Trade-in allowance | What the dealer credits you for your current vehicle | The dealer, based on your vehicle |
| Sales tax | 6.25% of the price, after the trade-in allowance comes off | State of Texas |
| Registration and title | State and county charges to plate and title the vehicle | State of Texas and your county |
| Documentary fee | The dealer’s charge for preparing the sale paperwork | The dealer, regulated by the state |
| Out-the-door total | Every line above, added up on one vehicle | Nobody, until it is written down |
Start with the MSRP and know what it leaves out
Kia’s 2026 starting prices run from $22,290 for a K4 LX to $39,190 for a Telluride LX, and every one of them leaves out destination freight, tax, title, license, and dealer fees. That makes the MSRP a starting point for the math, never the finish.
| Model and starting trim | Starting MSRP | Seats |
|---|---|---|
| Kia K4 LX | $22,290 | 5 |
| Kia Seltos LX | $24,990 | 5 |
| Kia Sportage LX | $28,990 | 5 |
| Kia Sorento LX | $32,390 | 7 |
| Kia Carnival LX | $37,490 | 7 |
| Kia Telluride LX | $39,190 | 8 |
A figure that names a trim belongs to that trim alone. A Sportage SX Prestige starts at $36,590, so a price quoted for one trim tells you nothing about another. That is why we show pricing and terms on a specific unit. Our pricing follows the market, and what we hold to is every line on paper.
What the Kia destination charge is and where to check it
The destination charge is what Kia bills to deliver the car to the dealer, and it sits on top of the MSRP instead of inside it. We leave the dollar figure off this page on purpose, because the number printed on the window sticker of the car in front of you is the one that counts.
Ask to see it as its own line, and match it to that sticker. Then ask whether anything else on the sheet is described as freight, delivery, or prep, and what it covers. One more question belongs here: ask whether the tax line is figured on the full price shown on the paperwork. If the answer is a clear yes or no, you are in good hands.
How Texas sales tax works when you trade in a car
Texas motor vehicle sales tax is 6.25% of the sales price, minus any trade-in allowance (Texas Comptroller, 2026). Your trade does two jobs. It lowers what you pay for the car, and it lowers the tax on that price.
Here is the math on a Sportage LX at its $28,990 starting MSRP, with a $10,000 trade-in allowance. Destination would add to the price, so your real tax line runs a little higher.
| Line | No trade-in | $10,000 trade-in |
|---|---|---|
| Price used for tax | $28,990 | $18,990 |
| Sales tax at 6.25% | $1,811.88 | $1,186.88 |
A $10,000 trade cuts the tax by $625. That is why we value trades online first and put the allowance on its own line.
Know your payoff before you talk numbers. Edmunds found that 28.2% of trade-ins in July 2025 carried negative equity, with buyers owing an average of $6,902 more than the vehicle was worth (Edmunds, 2025). If that is you, the gap rolls into the deal, and you should see it as a line, not find it inside a payment.
In a June 2026 Google review, Carla L. wrote: “Excellent in every category. Outstanding salesman to the vehicle and its features and the actual trade in situation”
Texas registration and title fees on a new Kia in Lubbock
Registration in Lubbock County starts with a $50.75 base fee, $1 for the TexasSure insurance check, a $4.75 processing and handling fee, and a $10 county local fee (TxDMV, 2026). The title fee is separate, and Lubbock sits in the $28 group (TxDMV Motor Vehicle Title Manual, 2026).
| Line | Amount | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Base registration | $50.75 | Shows as $51.75 on a renewal notice with TexasSure |
| TexasSure insurance verification | $1 | Added to the base fee |
| Processing and handling | $4.75 | Charged with registration |
| Lubbock County local fee | $10 | Set by the county fee chart |
| Title fee | $28 | Lubbock is in the $28 group |
| Inspection program replacement fee | $7.50 | A new, never-registered vehicle pays $16.75, which covers two years |
| Electric vehicle fee | $200 a year, or $400 for two years | Fully electric vehicles only; hybrids are exempt |
| Emissions test | None | Lubbock County is not an emissions county |
If you are shopping the EV3, EV6, EV9, or Niro EV, the electric vehicle fee is yours to plan for, and TxDMV says it does not apply to hybrid vehicles. These lines belong to the state and the county, so they should match the published amounts to the dollar. If your sheet shows more, ask what else is bundled in.
Texas caps no doc fee, and $225 is the line to watch
Texas sets no hard dollar cap on a dealer documentary fee. A fee of $225 or less needs no filing, and above $225 the dealer must file a notification and a cost analysis with the Office of Consumer Credit Commissioner (OCCC, 2024). That rule took effect July 11, 2024, and the dealer files it for each location where it sells vehicles.
The rule covers financed sales, which is most new-car buying. So ask for the doc fee amount as its own line before you drive over. If a dealer’s fee sits above $225, ask what the cost analysis behind it supports. A fair question gets a plain answer.
How to spot a fee that does not belong on your Kia paperwork
A line belongs on your sheet if you can name who gets paid and what it covers. The vehicle inventory tax is a good example: the Comptroller says it is a property tax assessed on the dealer, not the buyer, and a negotiable item on the sales agreement (Texas Comptroller, 2026). Sales tax is not charged on a separately stated inventory tax line.
Put these five on your question list:
- Vehicle inventory tax. Ask who owes it and why it is on your sheet.
- Add-ons. Ask whether each one is optional, what it does, and what it costs by itself.
- Second freight or prep lines. Ask what they cover that the destination charge does not.
- A doc fee above $225. Ask what the filed cost analysis supports.
- Registration lines above the state amounts. Ask what else is inside the number.
In a July 2026 Google review, Scott H. wrote about working with our team on a K5 GT: “By the end of the visit, I was confident that I was getting a fair deal.” That confidence comes from lines you understand.
Value your trade and get pre-approved online before you visit
At Group 1 Kia Hub City you can value a trade and get a fast pre-approval online, then finish at the 19th Street store with those steps already done. Your trade value then arrives as a number you have seen, and your financing arrives with terms you have read.
Ask the same three things on any loan: the rate, the length, and the total of all payments. A monthly payment alone hides every line we just walked through. Pre-approval lets you compare the terms on a specific vehicle with the terms you already hold.
In an August 2026 Google review, Liz T. wrote about her second purchase from us: “we got approved, signed everything, and were out the door!”
Ask for the out-the-door total in writing on the exact Kia
Before you drive over, ask for one sheet: the out-the-door total on the exact Kia you want, with every line named and priced. If a line has no name, ask for one. A total on one vehicle, in writing, is the number you can plan a budget around.
| Line | What to ask for | Check it against |
|---|---|---|
| MSRP | The price on the exact trim and unit | Kia’s starting price for that trim |
| Destination charge | Its own line with the amount | The window sticker on the car |
| Trade-in allowance | The number, on its own line | The value you got online |
| Sales tax | The tax line with its basis | 6.25% of the price after the trade comes off |
| Registration and title | Each state and county line | The amounts in the registration table above |
| Doc fee | The amount, as its own line | The $225 filing threshold |
| Add-ons | A list, each marked optional or not | Your own yes or no on each one |
We guide, we do not sell. Price and trade value in plain numbers, with no haggling theater, is the standard we hold ourselves to.
Only an out-the-door quote shows the whole price
A quote on one exact vehicle, with every line named, tells you what you will pay.
| Quote type | What the number covers | What to ask for next |
|---|---|---|
| Group 1 Kia Hub City quote on a specific unit | Price and terms for one exact vehicle | Every line in writing, including the doc fee amount |
| Sticker price (MSRP) | A starting price for one trim, before destination, tax, title, license, and dealer fees | The out-the-door total |
| Monthly payment | One number spread over a loan term | The price it was built from and the total of payments |
Frequently asked questions
How much does a Kia cost with fees included?
There is no flat percentage that fits every Kia, because the total depends on the trim, your trade, and the fees on that unit. Ask us for the out-the-door total on the exact vehicle, and we will show every line.
Is the Texas doc fee negotiable?
Texas sets no hard dollar cap on it, so the useful move is to ask for the amount as its own line before you visit. If it is above $225, ask what the cost analysis filed with the OCCC supports.
What is a dealer add-on, and do I have to buy one?
An add-on is an extra product or service added to the vehicle and priced on top of it. Ask for each one to be listed by name and price, and ask whether it is optional before you sign.
Does a Kia bought in Lubbock need an emissions test?
No. TxDMV limits emissions inspections to 17 named counties, and Lubbock County is not one of them. Texas also dropped the annual safety inspection for non-commercial vehicles on January 1, 2025.
Can I get pre-approved before I come in?
Yes. You can value your trade and get a fast pre-approval online, then finish at the 19th Street store. The terms you see online are the ones you can compare against the terms on a specific vehicle.
What if I owe more on my trade than it is worth?
Get your payoff amount from your lender first, then compare it to the trade value you get online. The difference shows up as its own number in the deal, and you should see it written down before you sign.
Is Gene Messer Kia the same store as Group 1 Kia Hub City?
Yes. The Gene Messer Kia store at 6006 19th Street is now Group 1 Kia Hub City, same address. Some older listings still carry the old name.
The sticker starts the conversation, and the total ends it
The number everyone quotes settles the least. The price you can plan around is a total on one exact Kia, with each line named, so you walk into 19th Street already knowing what you will sign. That is the total we show on a specific unit.
How Group 1 Kia Hub City puts price and terms on one exact vehicle
A total only helps when it is written on the vehicle you are buying, and that is how we show it. We are Lubbock’s Kia franchise at the 19th Street store that traded as Gene Messer Kia, and our pricing follows the market. You can shop, value your trade, and get pre-approved online, then finish with us in store.
